Bursary Scheme
NamPower offers attractive options
for bursaries to candidates for studies at (Southern African) Universities
and Technicons leading to Bachelor’s Degrees or Technical Diplomas in
disciplines or areas where the company has identified the need. This scheme
does not apply to NamPower employees.
- Electrical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Industrial Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Computer Science
- Commercial Law
- Other relevant fields
- be a Namibian citizen
- have a definite career in mind, be in
possession of a Matriculation certification or equivalent,
permitting registration as a student at a recognised university or
technikon
- current Grade 12 students should have
obtained above-average results in Grade 12 April and August exams
- be reported on favourably by the principal of
the school last attended or, if already at a university, by the head
of the university department concerned. Recent testimonies must also
be submitted.
- Have submitted all the required information
and documents in making the application for a bursary on the
prescribed form which must reach NamPower not late than 31 October.
- Be prepared to attend before an interviewing
panel of Company officials or bursary Committee at the most
convenient centre.
- Be prepared, on graduation, to enter into
permanent employment with the Company if so requested.
- The Bursary is paid out in instalments and
provides for the following payments:
- Full registration and tuition fees for the
course selected.
- The university or Technicon residence fee or
a board and lodging allowance equal to the residence fee, where
he/she is not a resident at the university or Technikon.
- An annual cash sum for personal use.
- Travelling expenses covering return (bus)
transport during the June and December holiday recess (when
possible) between a student’s home and the university or technikon
via the most economic route.
- All other expenses, including exemption and
hire of equipment, must be paid by the bursary holder.
On proof of registration,
NamPower will issue a cheque to the student for fees charged by the
university or Technicon on a six-month basis. This cheque will be issues
in the name of the institution concerned and not the student. The
personal allowance will be paid to the bursary holder in advance in
half-yearly instalments. If a bursary holder is unable to live in a
university or technikon residence, he/she will receive a sum equal to
the residence fee half-yearly in advance at the same time as his/her
personal cash allowance.
The renewal, suspension and
cancellation of a bursary will be in the Company's sole discretion.
Bursars will be notified in time of such decisions.Inter alia, however,
the following principles will be taken into account:
- The initial award will be for one year only
and will be subject to renewal on receipt of satisfactory reports
regarding academic progress and Conduct during the full period of
the course selected;
- where a university promoted a student
notwithstanding the fact that he/she has to carry a subject from the
previous year, the bursary may be renewed providing general progress
in other subjects has bean satisfactory;
- where a student has failed a year, but has
been granted permission by the university or technicon to repeat the
year, his/her bursary will be suspended for that year, but subject
to the progress he/she makes in repeating the year, his/her bursary
may be reinstated but not retrospectively
In the event of the studies not
being completed, or failure of examinations, the full amount of the loan
will be repayable in equal instalments over a maximum period of 12
months. No further assistance will be considered until such a time as
the bursar has cleared his indebtedness to NamPower.
It is an absolute condition of
any award that the bursar may not receive financial assistance from any
other source unless the facts have been disclosed to NamPower and the
company has signified, in writing, that it has no objection to the
holder continuing to receive assistance from such including assistance
from his/her parents out of purely private means.

The bursar will undertake to
enter into fulltime employment with the Company, upon graduation. Such
employment with the company must continue for at least the same number
of years as the student attended university or technicon under company
bursary.
Should there be no suitable position in the company, the
bursar will be released from the tie of the Company and also be free
from any financial obligations. Should he/she refuse or for any
reason fail to enter the service of the company , or after engagement
,resign from such services, an amount calculated pro-rata on the basis
of the uncompleted years of agreed service, shall become due of his/her
resignation or refusal to enter service.
Application forms are available
from the Bursary Administrator: NamPower, P.O. Box 2864, Windhoek,
completed forms, together with supporting documents, must be received
not later than 31 October of the year preceding studies. Applicants
selected for a personal interview will be required to present themselves
at NamPower centre in Windhoek, the exact dates and times to be advised.
Applicants will be notified whether they were accepted or not by the end
of November, but the Company reserves the right to withdraw the bursary
later if the applicant fails or does not fair well in the final
examinations of the year.
