Where has the year gone to? It’s only a matter of days before we say goodbye to 2005.
It has been a very eventful year for the Southern African electricity industry in terms of efforts aimed at ensuring a constant supply of electricity for the region, now and beyond.
The year was characterised by continuous consultations in the form of meetings, conferences and other conventions.
The diminishing surplus capacity in the region and the need for new generation and transmission projects to meet the ever increasing demand were discussed at these platforms.
Most notable of the efforts was the hosting of the Regional Electricity Investment Conference (REIC) in Windhoek in September, the signing of the Shareholders Agreement for the Joint Venture Company, Westcor (Pty) Ltd by the power utilities of the DRC, Angola, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa, and the continuous consultations between Namibia and Angola on developing a hydropower plant on the lower Kunene River.
Efforts to address the electricity demand in the region will continue in the New Year, as the region is committed to powering its people.
This edition of Watts On ushers our readers into the festive season with very “light” stories, lots of laughter (pages 16 & 17) and inspiration (Watts On Junior, pages 18 & 19).
A special “thank you” goes out to the staff of the NamPower stores at Van Eck, Brakwater and the head office, for taking off time from their very busy schedule, for pictures and to run me through the stocktaking process (story on page 5 &6).
Needless to say, I’m sure you are all looking forward to the festive break.
And before I pen off for the festive season too, just a bit of wisdom: Let us not get trapped in the “wait and see” syndrome or get used to postponing things that we really should be working on.
If we sit and wait without moving a finger, we surely don’t expect to get the results we are hoping for.
Time will move on and things could remain stagnant or change in the opposite direction than what we want them to.
Let every day, now and for years to come, be a day of action for us and for every good course.
The story on page 22 should inspire us to take on challenges, no matter how small or how big, with confidence. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a fabulous and productive New Year!
