    Dec 2005 - Jan 2006

    Dear Readers

A happy New Year to all our readers! We hope it will be a prosperous year for all of you. This is our first edition for this year and with the first month of the year already history we have been stuck to our computers in order to bring you this edition before the end of February. At some point I felt like there were less hours in a day than normal. Anyone else felt it too? Well, I guess this means that we have a challenging year lying ahead of us, with lots to do but with little time at hand. I will really appreciate some tips on time management.

This year is a very special year for the NamPower family. We are celebrating our 10th anniversary this year. It is even more special a year in that it also marks a little over a generation (30 years) of our existence as a power utility.

It has not been smooth sailing, but we have managed as a company to keep the “candle burning”. More challenges lie ahead for us, especially given the ever increasing demand for electricity, here in Namibia and in the region at large. We are braving ourselves to face these challenges head on. And like the Managing Director, Dr. Leake Hangala said at our last staff meeting on 1 December 2005, “the challenges we are facing should not derail us from our plans. We should remain focused.” Hard work, focus and commitment is what we should live by this year.

We have all seen it – the smoke billowing from the Van Eck power station in Windhoek since October last year. The story on page 2 tells why NamPower had to put in motion all its power stations since the end of last year. Van Eck is expected to continue running up until May and we hope to keep you updated on the matter.

Sometime towards the end of last year NamPower embarked on a credit rating exercise to ascertain its credit worthiness in the market. The company received a positive investment rating from Fitch Rating, an international rating agency. More on this on page 3.

The most part of this edition is very employee-focused, with lots and lots of pictures. We bring you graduates of our literacy programme, members of the new NamPower MUN Branch Executive Committee, our students and much more on the employees at various functions. Indulge yourself.

I wish you all a prosperous New Year!
