    Jan - Feb 2005

    Dear Readers

With the first month of the year already ancient history, we are stuck with our noses to the grindstone in order to get the first edition of Watts On out in time. After the holiday thrills, the realities of work seem rather harsh, but our publications team are facing them head-on with a new lay out programme and a new image for the Watts On.

We are very happy to report that the third phase of the Maize Triangle Project is expected to be completed a year ahead of schedule. The three-phase project, which commenced in 2002, aimed to provide electricity to the farmlands in the Tsumeb, Grootfontein and Otavi areas to encourage economic activity.

The NamPower celebration of World Aids Day coincided with the release of statistics of participation in the company’s HIV/AIDS “Know your status” campaign. More than 50% of the NamPower workforce participated in the campaign. Dr Libertine Amathila, Minister of Health and Social Services, commended NamPower for its HIV/AIDS programme and for encouraging its employees to know their status.

Martin Vosloo, an Eskom employee living with HIV/AIDS for the past twelve years, was a guest speaker at the event. He encouraged those who have tested positive to utilise the HIV/AIDS assistance offered through the company’s 100% employer contributed medical aid benefit.

NamPower and our Managing Director, Dr Leake Hangala, again featured prominently at the annual Namibia Leaders and Achievers Breakfast hosted by the Professional Management Review publication. The company and its MD brought home four awards. Congratulations to all who contribute to the positive image of our company!

While some of our technicians are hard at work restoring power in areas affected by weather-induced power outages, the Marketing and Communications section was hard at work to provide financial support to schools and educational institutions. The company recently contributed 16 computers and cash to a variety of schools and the Namibian Mathematics and Science Teachers Association (Namsta) who received N$120 000.

The company also sponsored two Namibian science learners for their airfare to Taiwan, where they would participate at a ten-day International Science Fair in Taipei. Izolda Hanse and Remy Ngamije were also the lucky recipients of NamPower promotional wear.

Naftali Amaambo, Assistant System Controller in Training, Transmission, was one of the two lucky NamPower employees to be selected for the fulltime educational assistance programme offered by the company. Kakotse Shigwedha, and Engineering Technician, is the other beneficiary of the programme.

Chris Mukubonda, our Internal Auditor, who have spent a year on study leave, shared some information on the need for the Internal Auditing function. Thank you, Chris.

Employees were in full bloom at the 2004 Year End Function that was held at Brakwater. With the theme “Tropical Party” there were flowers, bright colours and hats everywhere. Vickey Naanda and Naftali Mangundu were selected as the best-dressed winners.

Some of our employees were cornered for their 2005 wishes – ranging from health to wealth and peace. We hope all of them come true… and then some.

Watts On sports its normal share of wit, education, health news and inspiration. Find yours and have a Happy New Year!
